Tree trunk
- Start with a 500 pixel by 500 pixel
blank canvas. Open path tool, color: dark brown, shape:
Arrow 3.
- Draw an arrow, not quite as wide as
the canvas. Convert to image object.
- Select airbrush in a color slightly
lighter than the arrow, and texture 5th from the left in the
2nd row. Spray over the entire shape.
|
|
- Rotate arrow 90 degrees, so
the point is up. Select airbrush and a color slightly darker
than the arrow, same texture as in step 3. Spray entire arrow
again.
|
|
- Use the "Burn" tool to shade
the sides of the trunk and give the tree trunk dimension.
|
|
- Use the "Freely transform" tool to narrow
the arrow to the appropriate width for your tree trunk.

Foliage
- Select Chalk, preset Gritty, shape round, color dark
green. Open the brush panel (CTRL+F3) and set brush to height
15 and width 80.
- Click on "Mode" to paint as an object.
- Starting at bottom, zig zag back and forth as you wiggle the
brush up and down, making width slightly less than desired finished
size. Change brush width to 60 and height to 10 about halfway
up and then to 20 and 5 as you near the top.
- Go back to bottom and work back up with the smallest brush
size, extending width and moving up and down the width of each
original stroke.
- Click on "Mode" to leave object mode.
|
|
- Click on "Mode" to work in object mode.
Using "Bristle smear", brush size 15 and level 65, work from the
bottom up again, moving up and down and following the zig zag
pattern as in step 4. You may need to repeat this step to get
the desired foliage texture.
- Click on "Mode" to leave object mode.
- Select "Object Magic Eraser Tool" and uncheck the "Search
connected pixels" option. The object created in step 6 should
still be selected. Use the eraser tool to remove as much of
the white smear as possible. Zoom in and hide the background
layer (CTRL+F5), if needed.
|
|
- Select "Charcoal", a lighter green color
than your base foliage, and call up the Brush Panel. Set height
12, width 40, weight 82 and distribution 82.
- Click on "Mode", and dab on the lighter green in single clicks,
adding it to the top of the branches on the lighted side of the tree.
Use a darker shade to "highlight" the upper part of each branch layer
on the dark side of the tree.
- Click on "Mode". Merge all foliage layers into one,
and do any clean up you feel is necessary with the Eraser tool.
Make any necessary repairs to the trunk.
